Our Story
Black Women in Biomedical Engineering is a community of Black Women faculty, professionals, graduate, and undergraduate students in the field of Biomedical Engineering. This group was founded by Drs. LaShan Hendrix, Princess Imoukhuede, and Gilda Barabino in 2018 after recognizing the growing number of Black Women in attendance at the field’s professional society annual meeting, Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and desiring to create a space for them to feel seen and valued.
Since hosting our inaugural Black
Women in Biomedical Engineering special session during the BMES annual meeting, it has become a permanent and popular fixture at the meeting. Beyond the annual meeting, we connect through social engagement and networking to strengthen our community and inspire the next generation.
It is our intention for Black Women in Biomedical Engineering to serve as a supportive and empowering counterspace for Black Women in this field. We are committed to the retention and advancement of Black Women in the field of Biomedical Engineering. We focus on building sustainable networks that drive meaningful change.
